Here are some tips on preparing
your garden for the spring!
Tip 1: Get your shed organized - Make sure that you have all the tools you will need for your garden. Sharpen blades, oil hinges. Maybe you might need to replace, upgrade, or expand your tools. Use a mill file to sharpen the blades once they are sharpen use penetrating oil to remove and prevent any corrosion.
Take the time to restock any supplies like: fertilizer, soil, plant supports. If you are thinking on planting some tomatoes this year, maybe get a few tomato cages ready for when you need them.
Tip 2: Clear out any weeds, mulch and debris - Just as most of do in the beginning of spring inside our homes Spring Cleaning, you should also do a mini spring cleaning in the garden. You want to see bare soil in your garden beds or the areas you plan of using for your garden.
Again, take your time in this process to ensure that you have remove all the weeds from the area. You wouldn't want them to regrow and over crowd the space with your vegetables or flowers in your garden.
Tip 3: Prepare the soil - After the frost in your area has lifted and you know the soil can be worked. Start with loosing it up either by tilling or turning it, try to loosen the soil a good 14 inches deep. Once you have turned/loosen the soil, add your compost and amendments to the soil to make sure that the soil is balanced in the pH and nutrient levels.
Placing a thick layer of mulch where you can in your garden as mulch is a very effective way to keep the weeds at bay, just bury your seeds in the mulch as either they wont grow or have a really hard time sprouting.
